Pistol Law Question?

Question: Alright, I know it is illegal to purchase a handgun if you are under 21, since this is a Federal Law. But, somebody at my hunt club said that it was legal to own a handgun even if you were not 21. He also said that I could purchase one from a private citizen and it would be legal. This just seems awefully cloudy to me. I am hoping someone can clear this up. It it matters, I reside in Virginia. Also, I have no intentions to buy a pistol now anyways, just trying to become literate on this subject. Thanks In Advance!

Answer: Unfortunately, with there being 10,000 plus gun laws in the US it can get confusing...but in this case it is a confusion of federal and local laws. Federal laws govern the commerce end of firearms-It is illegal for a dealer to SELL a handgun to someone under 21 federally ...however possession of a handgun by someone under 21 is not addressed federally but by local(state) laws which may or may not allow the possession of handguns by persons under 21....put simply you can't buy one from a dealer if under 21 but your father can give you one(depending on the state).
